Quel rapport me direz-vous entre le bilinguisme et le permis de conduire ? C'est en discutant avec quelqu'un la semaine dernière que cela m'est venu. Beaucoup de parents pensent qu'en mettant
leurs enfants dans un cours de langue, qu'en leur achetant les livres et vidéos qui aideront, qu'en ayant une baby-sitter bilingue, qu'en voyageant de temps à autre, ou bien encore qu'en ayant
changé de pays leurs enfants devineront bilingues sans difficulté et surtout qu'ils le resteront. Et bien non, ce serait bien trop simple. C'est un peu comme le permis de conduire, il ne suffit
pas d'acheter le livre du code de la route pour savoir conduire. Cela se fait en plusieurs étapes : apprendre les règles, passer et réussir le code, puis apprendre à se tenir derrière le volant
et à gérer la route et ses autres occupants. Ensuite, on passe l'examen de conduite. Avec un peu de chance, on réussit. Souvent, on ne réussit pas du premier coup, car il faut négocier beaucoup
d'événements et d'actions en même temps.
Et bien devenir bilingue, c'est pareil !! Il ne suffit pas d'acheter une méthode, parfois de la lire pour dire que c'est bon. Loin de là !! Il faut y travailler. Il faut essayer et encore
essayer. Il y a beaucoup à apprendre et à négocier. Il faut apprendre les mots et les règles de grammaire. Ensuite, il faut savoir les utiliser. Surtout, comme pour la conduite, il faut de la
pratique, beaucoup de pratique. Il faut se lancer, négocier les virages culturels et interculturels. Vous pourrez avoir acheté la meilleure méthode au monde, trouvé une super baby-sitter
bilingue, envoyer vos enfants dans les meilleures écoles et cours de langue, si vous ne leur montrez pas comment utiliser ces langues que vous leur offrez, si vous ne les aidez pas à négocier
tous ces virages, si vous ne leur montrez pas l'exemple, ils ne deviendront pas bilingues.
C'est vous les parents qui êtes les moniteurs et devaient instruire vos enfants. Ce sera long, parfois difficile et frustrant, mais à la clef, il y a un permis de bilinguisme qui ouvre de
nombreuses portes. Tout comme vous avez appris à vos enfants à marcher, à parler, à manger, vous devez les aider à devenir bilingues. Tout ce que vous aurez trouvé ou acheté ne seront que des
aides.
Donc, oui, le bilinguisme c'est comme le permis de conduire, il faut s'exercer encore et encore avec l'aide de moniteurs (vous les parents) pour obtenir ce permis de bilinguisme...

to time or even in changing country, their children will easily become bilingual and will stay bilingual. That would be way too easy. It is somewhat like a driving licence, buying
the book with the rules of the roads is not enough to make you a good driver. There are a few steps to follow : learn the rules, sit for the theory test and pass it, then learn how to sit in
a car and manage the roads and all the other users. Then you have a driving test. If you are lucky, you pass it. Very often, we do not succeed on the first occasion, as we have to
negotiate many roads events and proper actions in the car at the same time.
Becoming bilingual is the same thing!! Buying a method, and reading it is not enough. Far from that!! You need to work on it. You have to try and try again.
There is a lot to learn and negotiate. You have learn words and grammer rules. Then you have to be able to use them. As for driving, you need practice, a lot of practice. You have to try
and navigate through the cultural and intercultural loops. You may have bought the best method in the world, found the best bilingual baby-sitter, send your children to the best
schools or language institutes, if you do not show them how to use those languages that you are giving them, you are not helping them to go round those loops, you are not showing them
the example and they will not become bilingual.
You, as parents, are the instructor and have to educate your children. It will be long, sometimes difficult and frustrating, but at the end, there is
licence in bilingualism which opens many doors. In the same manner that you have been showing your children how to walk, how to speak, how to eat, you have to help them become
bilingual. Everything that you can find or buy are only helps.
So, yes, bilingualism is like a driving licence, you have to train again and again with the help of instructors (the parents) to gain this licence in
bilingualism...

Wat is het verband tussen tweetaligheid en de rijbewijs? Wanneer ik in gesprek met een vriend was dat ik daarvoor dacht vorige week. Veel ouders
denken dat door her invoering van hun kinderen in een taalschool, door her kopen van boeken en video's, door een tweetalige au-pair, door het reizen of wel het wonen in een andere land dat hun
kinderen gemakkelijker tweetalige kunnen worden en dat ze zullen tweetalige blijven. Nou, dat zou te eenvoudig zijn. Het is een beetje zoals de rijtaak, het is niet genoeg het book van de
regels van de weg te kopen om rijden te weten. Dit gebeurt in verschillende stappen: de verkeersregels te leren, de verkeersreglement slagen, dan achter het stuur te leren en de beheren van
de weg onder te handelen. Vervolgens passeren wij het rijexamen. Met een beetje geluk lukt het. Vaak is het niet op de eerste keer want we moeten een heleboel gebeurtenissen en
mensen onderhandelen.
Tweetalige te worden is hetzelfde!! Het is niet genoeg een leerboek te kopen, soms deze te lezen om te zeggen: dat is goed! Zeker niet!! Jullie moeten werken. Jullie
moeten proberen en proberen opnieuw. Er is veel te leren en te onderhandelen. Jullie moeten woorden en grammaticaregels leren. Daarna moeten jullie deze gebruiken. Zoals het rijden moeten
jullie oefenen, veel oefeningen zijn nodig. Jullie moeten ook culturele en interculturele verschuivingen onderhandelen. Jullie kunnen de beste leerboek in de wereld kopen, de perfecte
au-pair vinden, jullie kinderen in de beste scholen of taalcursussen sturen, als je hun niet laten zien hoe met deze talen de verschuivingen onder te handelen, als je hun het voorbeeld
niet laten zien, zullen ze nooit tweetalig zijn.
Het is jullie, de ouders, die de opleiders zijn en jullie moeten hun kinderen trainen. Het zal lang, soms frustrerend zijn, maar de voorraden is een
tweetalige bewijs dat een verschil kan doen. Net zoals jullie kinderen wandelen, praten, eten hielpen, moeten jullie met de oefeningen van talen helpen. Alles dat jullie gevonden of gekocht
hebben zullen alleen hulpmiddelen zijn.
Ja, tweetaligheid is als rijden. Jullie moeten oefenen en oefenen met opleiders (de ouders) om deze tweetalige bewijs te krijgen....
