Récemment, je discutais avec une maman qui s'inquiétait de voir disparaître la langue de la maison au profit de celle de l'école. Il est parfois tellement plus facile pour un enfant de raconter ce qui s'est passé à l'école dans la langue de celle-ci que de le faire dans la langue de la maison qui sont parfois bien éloignées l'une de l'autre.
Il faut pourtant encourager vos enfants à utiliser cette langue de la maison qui est votre langue d'origine, un héritage important pour eux.
Alors comment faire ? Je vous donne ici 5 astuces que vous pouvez mettre en place à la maison.
1 - soyez positif et encouragez votre enfant : ne passez pas votre temps à corriger votre enfant quand il essaye de parler votre langue et fait des erreurs. Cela n'aura tendance qu'à le décourager. Si ce n'est jamais bien, pourquoi ferait-il des efforts. Bien au contraire, encouragez-le et faites-lui des compliments. C'est bien plus important et cela lui montrera que vous voyez les efforts qu'il/elle fait et que vous les appréciez. Un enfant cherche toujours à faire plaisir à ses parents, et s'il voit que vous êtes content, il/elle continuera.
2 - rencontrez d'autres personnes, d'autres enfants qui parlent la même langue : il est important pour votre enfant de voir qu'il n'est pas le seul à parler cette langue dans l'endroit où vous êtes. Je vous conseille donc d'organiser des rencontres avec d'autres familles, toutes les excuses sont bonnes pour les rencontrer : anniversaires, fêtes du pays d'origine... Pourquoi ne pas vous organiser en association et avoir des activités régulières avec les enfants dans votre langue ?? 3 - montrez votre passion pour votre langue et votre pays d'origine : en effet, si votre enfant voit à quel point votre langue est passionnante et qu'en la connaissant, il découvrira votre pays et sa culture, il aura envie de l'utiliser. Faites preuve de passion. Ne donnez pas un cours d'histoire sur votre pays, ni un cours sur l'importance de parler la langue, soyez un exemple et faites vivre votre pays chez vous. De petites choses comme des repas typiques, des décorations par ci, par là, des petites histoires.... toutes ces petites choses qui feront la différence, qui vous tiennent à cœur et montreront à votre enfant d'où il vient. En plongeant dans votre culture, avec des chansons, des films... en aiguisant sa curiosité sur votre langue et votre pays, il aura envie d'utiliser la langue.
4 - rendez la langue visible dans la maison : il suffit de petites choses comme mettre votre ordinateur ou téléphone portable dans votre langue, d'écrire de petites notes - comme la liste des courses - ou des messages brefs à vos enfants sur leur téléphone portable. Affichez des posters dans votre langue. Il existe des tas de petites touches qui, sans vous envahir, peuvent rendre la langue visible et donc utile, et feront que votre enfant l'utilisera.
5 - rendez votre langue audible : la radio est un bon moyen d'apprendre une langue. Au lieu de regarder la télévision ou un DVD ou bien de lire un livre, vous pouvez faire en sorte que votre enfant entende votre langue. Si en cuisinant, ou en faisant le ménage, votre radio est allumée et que vos enfants sont là, ils vont l'entendre. C'est une manière indirecte pour eux de découvrir votre langue et aussi d'éveiller leur curiosité. Petit à petit, ils se rendront compte qu'ils comprennent et auront envie de vous le montrer.

Not so long ago, I was chatting with a mother who was fearing that her mother tongue would disappear from their home and be fully replaced by the school language. It is sometimes easier for a child to tell about his/her day at school in the school language than in the home language which can be very very different from each other.
However, it is important to encourage your chid(res) to use the home language, which is your heritage language. So how can you do? Here are five tips that you can use at home.
1 - be positive and encourage your child : do not spend hours correcting your child when he/she tries to use your language and makes mistakes. This will only discourage him/her. If things are never right, why bother? Why should he/she make efforts to speak your language, when you always find something wrong?? You have to be encouraging. Applaud the efforts. Make kind and positive remarks. It is way more important than criticising and this will show your child that you appreciate the effort that he/she is making. A child always tries to please his/her parents. If he/she sees that their parents are happy, they will keep on. They will try again.
2 - meet people, meet people who speak the same home language than yourself: it is important that your child sees that he/she is not the only child speaking that same language in the place where you live. I would advise that you organise get-together with other families, any type of get-together: birthday parties, celebrating the home country important days... Why not trying to organise a small association and have regular activities with the children speaking the language. 3 - show you are passionate about your language and your home country: it is true, if your child sees how fascinating your language is, and that in speaking it he/she will discover your country, your culture, then he/she is more likely to be wishing to speak it. Show some passion! Do not give a class on the history of your country, nor about the importance of speaking your language, be an example and make your house a small representation of your country. Little things such as dishes for the meals, decorations on the walls... pictures... all those little things will make a huge difference. Those little things which are important for you will show your child where you are coming from. In diving into your culture, with songs, films... in making them keen to discover more, they will find it important to speak your language.
4 - make your language visible in the house: it needs little things such as putting your computer or your mobile phone into your home language. Write notes, such as the shopping list or short messages for your children on their mobile phone. Put poster in your home language... Without invading you, there are many little tricks to add your language into your home and to make it visible and thus useful. Then your child will want to speak it.
5 - make your language audible: listening to the radio is a good way to learn a language. Instead of looking at the television or a DVD, instead of reading a book, tuning on the radio will make your child hear your language. While cooking, cleaning, keep your radio on and when your children are there, they will hear it. It is an indirect manner to have them discover your language and to keep them curious about it. Little by little, with them realising, they will understand and they will want to show that to you.

Onlangs sprak ik een moeder die zich zorgen maakte over het zien verdwijnen van de thuistaal ten gunste van de schooltaal. Het is soms zo veel gemakkelijker voor een
kind om in de taal van dit kind te vertellen wat er op school is gebeurd, dan om het te doen in de taal van het huis, die soms erg ver van elkaar verwijderd is.
Je moet uw kinderen echter aanmoedigen om deze thuistaal te gebruiken, je moedertaal, een belangrijk erfgoed voor hen.
Dus wat te doen? Ik geef je hier 5 tips die je thuis kunt toepassen.
1 - wees positief en moedig uw kind aan: besteed geen tijd aan het corrigeren van uw kind wanneer hij/zij je taal probeert te spreken en fouten
maakt. Dit zal hem/haar alleen maar ontmoedigen. Als het nooit goed is, waarom zou hij/zij er dan moeite voor doen? Integendeel, moedig hem aan en geef hem/haar complimenten. Het is veel
belangrijker en het zal hem/haar laten zien dat je ziet hoeveel moeite hij/zij doet en dat je het waardeert. Een kind probeert altijd zijn ouders te plezieren, en als ze zien dat je gelukkig
bent, zullen ze doorgaan.
2 - andere mensen ontmoeten, andere kinderen die dezelfde taal spreken: het is belangrijk dat je kind ziet dat hij/zij niet de enige is die deze
taal spreekt op de plaats waar je zich bevindt. Ik raad je daarom aan om bijeenkomsten met andere families te organiseren, alle excuses zijn goed om ze te ontmoeten: verjaardagen, vieringen van
het land van herkomst... Waarom organiseer je jezelf niet in verenigingsverband en organiseer je regelmatig activiteiten met de kinderen? En daar kan ik je helpen bij de voorbereiding, neem

3 - toon je passie voor je taal en je land van herkomst: inderdaad, als je kind ziet hoe fascinerend je taal is en dat door het te kennen, het je
land en zijn cultuur zal ontdekken, zal hij/zij het willen gebruiken. Toon passie. Geef geen geschiedenisles over je land, noch een les over het belang van het spreken van de taal, wees een
voorbeeld en breng uw land thuis tot leven. Kleine dingen zoals typische maaltijden, versieringen hier en daar, kleine verhaaltjes... al die kleine dingen die het verschil zullen maken, die je na
aan het hart liggen en je kind laten zien waar hij/zij vandaan komt. Door je onder te dompelen in je cultuur, met liedjes, films... door hun nieuwsgierigheid naar je taal en je land te vergroten,
zullen ze de taal willen gebruiken.
4 - maak de taal zichtbaar in je huis: alleen kleine dingen zoals je computer of mobiele telefoon in je taal zetten, kleine notities schrijven
- zoals het boodschappenlijstje - of korte berichten naar je kinderen op hun mobiele telefoon. Plaats posters in je taal. Er zijn veel kleine details die, zonder je te overweldigen, de taal
zichtbaar en dus nuttig kunnen maken, en ervoor zorgen dat je kind het gaat gebruiken.
5 - maak uw taal hoorbaar: de radio is een goede manier om een taal te leren. In plaats van tv of een dvd te kijken of een boek te lezen, kunt
je je kind je taal laten horen. Als tijdens het koken of het huishouden je radio aan staat en je kinderen er zijn, zullen ze het horen. Het is voor hen een indirecte manier om je taal te
ontdekken en ook om hun nieuwsgierigheid op te wekken. Beetje bij beetje zullen ze beseffen dat ze het begrijpen en het je willen laten zien.
